Because you are connected to the power grid and consume electricity. Grid fees cover the cost we incur to transmit electricity to you as a customer.
The fixed fee is intended to cover our fixed costs, meaning expenses that occur regardless of whether electricity is consumed or not. Based on this, the fixed fee is actually too low.
Grid fees and electricity prices are generally determined independently of each other. Our grid losses costs are influenced by the electricity price, thus affecting the grid fee to some extent. The framework for grid fees is set by the NVE (Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate), while the electricity price is market-based, where supply and demand are crucial. This means that grid fees vary little, while the electricity price can vary by several hundred percent. Consequently, the electricity price can be both lower and higher than the grid fee. In our area, the electricity price has varied between 18 and 80 øre/kWh in recent years, while grid fees have ranged between 10 and 25 øre/kWh.
